Cemetery stone renovation underway
The Church Cemetery
With the establishment of the congregation, a small plot of church property was set aside for a cemetery. It was divided into two sections, one for adult burial and the other for small children and teenagers.
The first burials were recorded in 1878: four young people ranging in age from newborn to 18 years.
It was unique in its pattern of burial in that grave sites were to be in rows and all burials were in order of death, with the exception of those second from either end of a row. The end site could be reserved for the remaining mate.
As the need developed, the cemetery area was extended further east. Thus, the cemetery today covers the entire southern portion of the church property.
At the annual meeting of 1963, interest was expressed concerning a perpetual care fund for the church cemetery. The fund was initiated and is in force to ensure the grounds will be cared for in future generations.
At the congregational meeting in July 1963, it was decided that husband and wife may buy side-by-side grave sites in the new section. Burial was to remain in rows and in the order of death as established in 1877. In 1995 small pine trees were planted in a row along the east cemetery fence.
